Greetings, fellow retro computing enthusiasts! Today, we’re embarking on a journey back to the golden age of computing with the Amiga 600 and the latest Amiga OS 3.2. We’ll be installing this classic operating system on a Compact Flash (CF) card to give our beloved Amiga 600 a new lease on life. So, grab your floppy disks, strap in, and let’s get started!
Hardware Requirements:
- Amiga 600 – Your trusty old Amiga 600, still going strong after all these years!
- Compact Flash (CF) Card and Adapter – We’ll be using a CF card as our “hard drive” for the Amiga OS. You’ll need a CF card (4GB or larger is recommended) and a CF-to-IDE adapter.
- PC with a CF Card Reader – You’ll need a PC with a CF card reader to format the CF card and transfer the Amiga OS files.
Software Requirements:
- Amiga OS 3.2 – Download the latest Amiga OS 3.2 from the official website.
- WinUAE – A popular Amiga emulator that we’ll use to create a bootable CF card image.
- HDToolBox – A utility for configuring the CF card as a hard drive for the Amiga 600.
Step 1: Prepare the CF Card
- Connect the CF card to your PC using the CF card reader.
- Format the CF card as FAT32 using a disk utility on your PC.
Step 2: Create a Bootable CF Card Image
- Open WinUAE and create a new configuration for the Amiga 600.
- Select the CF card as the hard drive and set the size to match the CF card’s capacity.
- Start WinUAE and boot from the Amiga OS 3.2 floppy disk image.
- Use the HDToolBox utility to partition the CF card and install the Amiga OS 3.2 onto it.
Step 3: Install the CF Card in the Amiga 600
- Turn off the Amiga 600 and disconnect the power cable.
- Open the Amiga 600 case and locate the IDE port.
- Connect the CF-to-IDE adapter to the IDE port and insert the CF card.
- Close the Amiga 600 case and reconnect the power cable.
Step 4: Boot into Amiga OS 3.2
- Turn on the Amiga 600 and wait for the boot process to complete.
- You should now be greeted with the Amiga OS 3.2 desktop!
This guide will be updated over time.
That’s it! With a little bit of elbow grease and a lot of nostalgia, you’ve successfully installed Amiga OS 3.2 on your Amiga 600 using a CF card. Now go forth and relive the glory days of computing with your trusty Amiga 600!
